My dad exactly.
He will spend half a day screwing around welding some that can
be replaced for $20.
One day my jacket caught the screen door latch, and it broke inside.
I was going to my girlfriends house, so I told I'd grab one at the hardware.
No we can fix it, quick.
Took it off, drilled out the rivets,
Cleaned up the pot metal parts, and started welding.
With a stick welder. That didn't go easy.
3 or 4 hours later, after we peened the last rivet.
I still stopped at the hardware store.
A complete unit, new. $13.
Of course the welded pot metal didn't hold up, within a
year, I bought a new latch.
