I just used an egg batter with bread crumbs with a bit of salt. Don't want too much other flavour to overpower the fish. They are pretty good as is.



Used to net them in spring in Lake Superior . I remember cleaning 5 gal buckets of them. They were so good. Jealous. What do you use to catch through the ice?


We use a wild shrimp from NFLD called prawns with two or three hooks on a line with a lead weight about 6" off the bottom.

I used to see folks catching smelt at night around the Great Lakes as a kid. I grew up in Ont. They'd drop a 4 corner net over the side of a low bridge and lower a Coleman lantern to the water. When the fish come to the light, up comes the net. 100s in every haul.
