I've tried to "forsake" farmer tight as well. With these rings it really isn't needed. I think the surface area of these rings help hold better than narrow rings. Mine didn't even get fully tightened and the scope was unmovable. I tightened the screws to the point that to go any farther would have called for "farmer tight".
As a heads up, when Weaver list the low rings as being suitable for up to 38mm objective scopes, they mean it. I bought a set of lows and set of mediums. The lows will not allow for 40mm objectives on a Remington 700 Classic barrel contour.
