I just shortened my finger by a 1/2 inch and my dream of learning to play Piano are ruined

Ouch - that is going to take a while - but with proper care and treatment it may heal up much better than you might imagine. Don't give up on the piano idea - I have seen worse fingers on some very good players. By now, I have spent about 90% of a lifetime trying to avoid such damage due to playing a number of instruments - and with mechanical work, wood work, hunting/fishing/outdoor and wilderness adventures, I have been fortunate.
