Mike, it's far cheaper to just buy a new outboard, than any major rebuild. A careful internet search will yield some places with a small inventory.

You might have settle for a different name on the cowl than you are used to. But most of the small outboards are made by Tohatsu anyway, plus Honda and Suzuki still build their own. AFAIK.

Automotive engines? It is real tough to beat a Detroit crate motor. Unless one is looking for serious performance upgrades.

I am far more familiar with GMC V8 engines than the alternatives. But am amazed that one can buy a stock 5.7 Chevy for around $2k, or bump the HP by almost 100hp in a GM factory built engine for about $5.5K
