Natural sponge about the size of a baseball.
Soak it then squeeze down as small as you can get it, wrap with fishing line to keep it small as possible.
Let dry.
Coat in peanut butter or bacon grease.

Old timers here used to tie a knot in a big rag,
then bacon grease.


If they were nicer, they broke out the corn cob and Turpentine on
dogs or cats they could catch.

Dad has a couple stories of the corn cob treatment.
Sounds pretty effective.
