I would not count on a return call personally. I would either let Karl contact them and stay out of it, or if Karl doesn`t care, then I`d call untill I got to the bottom of the pile. My nature would be for me to call if they were disregarding the contact effort. I feel you were owed an explanation a few days into the return, not weeks.
