I have never wanted to take a lot of cash. I started out taking travelers cheques. Now I use TransferWise (
https://wise.com/). I also have an account setup that doesn't charge fees to access foreign tellers and has very low conversion fees. I draw money at ATM machine in local currency rather than paying bank currency exchange rates.
