I think a lot has to do with the size of the coyotes where you find them. When we ran hounds up north, lots of the coyotes went over 50 pounds and the two biggest I can recall seeing went 72 pounds on a scale. Number 4 buck was the choice of load for there they might cross fairly close, and everyone had a rifle in the truck for where they might have to watch for shots at longer distances. In my opinion, #2 lead is best reserved for foxes, which, in my experience, are a lot easier to kill than coyotes. I've killed foxes with steel 2's when duck hunting at surprising distance.
