Same here. Been there, done that. The really chopped down 1911s tend to need very frequent spring changes, as timing becomes more of an issue the more they are cut down.

The exception would be those 1911 style handguns that are not merely chopped down, but are actually shrunken down versions of the 1911, like the Springfield Armory EMP 9mm. They actually took the 1911 design back to the drawing board and made it to smaller proportions all around to match the smaller 9mm cartridge it's chambered for (The EMP is too small in overall proportions to even be offered in .45 ACP). That's one 1911 style gun that I believe doesn't share the timing sensitivity with the chopped down 1911s. But that's really a topic for a different thread, since it's technically not a 1911, but a 1911 style handgun, built from the ground up around the 9mm cartridge.
