An 18-year-old Inverness man who hit a cyclist in the late night hours Sunday, July 31, and left the scene is now facing a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

William Joseph Cohill was traveling westbound at 11:38 p.m. Sunday, July 31, east of the intersection with South Missouri Drive in a sedan, the FHP report stated. The cyclist, a 40-year-old male from Homosassa, was traveling westbound on West Grover Cleveland Boulevard.

According to the FHP report, Cohill failed to observe the cyclist and collided with the rear of the bicyclist who suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.

Following the collision, Cohill fled the scene and was located soon thereafter by Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies who conducted a traffic stop at the Crystal Center Plaza in Homosassa, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, FHP spokesman. A portion of the front right fender was found on scene, matching a missing part of the sedan driven by Cohill.

Post-Miranda, Cohill told troopers he was the driver involved in the crash.

FHP troopers later charged arrested Cohill for leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Cohill’s two 17-year-old passengers were not injured in the wreck. His bond was set at $15,000
