In my opinion there are so many excellent bullets available I refuse to use standard cup-and-core bullets on elk other than in my low velocity lever and hand guns. By "excellent", I mean bullets that provide a high degree of accuracy, hold together after impact near and far, and provide controlled and limited expansion for deep penetration. My choices are, in no particular order, Barnes TTSX, Nosler AB and ABLR, North Fork SS, Swift Scirocco II, Federal Terminal Ascent and similar.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.
