I would probably go with the N frame if you plan to scope it, L frame for iron sights. The reason is the different balance with the full lug vs "not lug" barrel. I waffled for several months on my last purchase. I was weighing S&W 4" N frame vs 6-1/2" N frame vs 6" L frame while also keeping an eye out for a Ruger GP-100 match champion w/ adjustable sights. Instead I kinda "went sideways" and bought the 5" 7-shot 686 from the "3-5-7" series. I really like the balance on the gun. It may get scoped for load work up but in the long run it's going to wear iron sights. That won out. I hope it shoots as good as it looks and feels.
