Do not deny him the blessing of giving you something.........................
A lot of people say no because they don't 'need' it, can 'do it' themselves, or are just too proud..........
The giver wants and needs to give, and there must be someone to give to!!!

I agree with this.
But totally applaud you with spending the time with him and working on what's important to him, let alone the fellowship part - religious or otherwise.
It is your way of giving. Well done.
