I think the two easiest choices are a Browning Bar DBM or the Ruger SFAR.

Both are in 308 which is interchangable in terms of performance with a 30-06.

If you want the more traditional rifle go with the BAR. If you want all the options that come with an AR, go with the Ruger.

If you live or hunt in a place with no ARs,the Browning chooses itself.

I would probably shoot Nosler Partitions which expand rapidly and penetrate very well

I have only killed one bear, a black bear in Ontario. But the 308 Caliber Nosler Partition instantly put the bear down.

Another great choice in 308 ammo would be the 165 Grain Trophy Bonded Tip by Federal. It worked great on African plains game for me.
