He sure could have been.
Sometimes part of the director's vision gets edited out so small holes in the plot can be overlooked if the overall movie is a good story well told. I don't sit there during the movie and judge foreshadowing, character development, motive and all that - rather just sit back and enjoy the story. But when a movie disappoints like this, one can easily see where all of the disappointment lay. The story here was not told well at all and that is unpardonable.
However, Jennifer Connelly gets more beautiful in every movie she's in, so it was not a total waste.
