I have not actively hunted in years but I did quite a bit of deer, dove, and squirrel hunting in my teens, twenties, and thirties. My favorite squirrel rifle was a Marlin 783 .22 Magnum because it shot so much flatter than a .22 LR. I had it sighted dead on 25 yards and that made it a little high at 50 yards and little low at 80. My two best squirrel head shots were at 50 and 80 yards. The 50 was in the fork of a big oak near Waterloo Alabama (offhand) and the 80 was as you described a squirrel peeking around a tree near Cloverdale Alabama (I used the sitting position with elbows on my knees and aimed about an inch high).

I pretty much am just a range shooter now. I run a different .22 match every Saturday of the month. This little local match we shot in Sheffield today is a great warm up for the squirrel hunters in our club (50 yards and 25 shots):
