Tronskie,

A herd of javelina is called a sounder. I have no idea where the name came from. Seeing a dozen javelina together is not uncommon. I can remember back in the early 80s when we saw a sounder of over 60 animals.

I have hunted with bird dogs for over 20 yrs. This is the first time a dog was attacked. I believe the reason was the surprise factor. The dogs rounded the curve of the hill and were into them with no warning. There were a few young and I figure the attacker was defending them.

Generally a javelina is not very agressive and would rather run than fight. Poor Thor was second into the area and was the one given the message to back off.

If the attack continued I would have tried to stop it anyway I could. The problem is using a shotgun with #8 shot. I'd hit the dog so it would have to be a point blank shot with burned hair.

Stuff happpens, glad it worked out for my hunting buddy.
