Flu vaccine is not live virus. It can't make you sick, any more than drinking Coke can make you drunk. The problem you experienced is fairly common... you get the vaccine in the fall, when other viruses such as adenovirus and parainfluenza virus are rampant. You got sick coincidentally with one of these other viruses. Happens all the time.
I got my fluvax last week (I am required to do so by law) for the 25th straight year. This week I happen to have a cold, but it's only the second time I've been sick following flu immunization. It's just the luck of the draw when autumn viruses are circulating.
