Technically, she's correct. The laymans method of determining spring "weight" and the useful remaining "life" of the spring is determined by counting coils and measuring the remaining length of the factory recoil spring.

In the absence of specialized equipment, this is the only reasonable method of determining which spring you have and whether or not it has enough "life" left in it to operate the pistol reliably.
