If using a 3.6" long action, go 284, 7x57, 7x57 AI, 280, or 280 AI. The 7mm-08 AI is still short on capacity to all these (except the 7x57), so why not use the extra length to your advantage?
Side note: I always thought a "long range" set-up of a 7x57 would be really cool. Blasphemy, but cool nonetheless
