It's not a figment of someone's vivid imagination....it's a documented variation (#5 version) of a M70 front sight ramp. The ramp was cross-hatched with a roll die after being soldered into place. The 1955 year of production of this rifle matches up with the serial # range when the #5 version ramp was used.
