Any one have any input on the great plains hunter from lyman? ive shot a friends TC last year and liked it. I borrowed a hawken style from a buddy to try Im not sure who made it It dosent matter as it was only good for a trap stake. so I wanted to get my own flint lock this year and was looking at the great plains in 50 cal. any input would be appreciated
They are great! I have a 54 cal, they group great.
I have a cap version, Midsouthshooters supply is the best place to buy one.

I was wondering how they were out of the box. this will be my 1st ML and didnt want a lemon. in PA I need a flint to hunt most seasons I was looking at the 50 but didnt know of any real adv to the 54 vs 50 ect this black powder is new to me and wanted to look & ask before I leap <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I bought mine under the guidance of a an old smoke pole shooter.
Fact is he was a rendevous guy, and used to build 4 of them a year. He'd win the shooting contest there and then he'd sell the "winning gun" and make a good profit.
while he was coaching me through building mine a couple other guys gave him static for doing so..
The only trick you need to know if you get a Great Plains it to lap the bore with steel wool. It'll tighten your group down to clover leaf's at 50 yards, or at least it did mine.
Thanks a good looking ML! I ordered a kit from midsouth friday lets see how I do. Steel wool Id figure on the finer side of the scale did you use any compound ect? Thanks Dave
Old Rondo was the feller who taught me how to make that smoke pole.
He told me to run a fine steel wool wrapped around the jag and cloth to polish off the burs from the lands. Simply run it up and down until it feels smooth.
One of my friends had a lyman deer stalker that would only group around 5" at 50 yards. He did the steel wool trick and it now groups around 1.5" ... pretty cool!
