This time of year...some not so smart p/dog shooters pick up

their recently shot (or pieces) of p/dog carcasses...not sure why

they want to pick up a flea ridden rodent...here's why I don't..

I've always worn boots and jeans when traipsing around in Prairie Dog towns and I damn sure don't pick up them up for that very reason!

Out here, it's assumed all the ground squirrels have it. Shoot them by the dozen, but won't touch one

Shot pdogs a few years ago by laying prone on a hill above them. Felt like my skin was crawling for days afterwards once I realized what I had done. Their towns are flea central, marmots in colonies are just as bad. Wind cave park spreads flea killer around the colonies to keep plague down, entire PD towns in S. Dakota will disappear for years from the plague.

Or, put your bench in the bed of you pick-up, and shoot from there.

Didn't know PDs carried the plague, but then I didn't know til a year or so ago that armadillos carried and transmitted Leprosy either. The CDC says don't even handle the various souveniers made from armadillos.

and none in Florida, of course. Going out West, and shooting some PDs, is high on my list of things to do.

We used to always carry a huge ground tarp to shoot off of.

Many years ago, I read somewhere that the Great Plague of England that killed so many was caused by all the rats, of course which carried the Fleas, which transmitted the Plague to humans.

The article said that the people at that time thought that the Plague was caused by cats, which they killed because they were "evil".
I find it very ironic that they were killing the very animals that probably would have helped in controlling the Plague, by eating the rats.
But of course, personal hygiene, and sanitation were non-existent in the Dark Ages. Which I'm sure had a lot to do with big outbreaks of any disease, back then.
Don't know how true the article was, but I thought about it when reading this thread.

Yep. That. Would make sense, also.

Plague goes through the PD towns in Wyoming on a fairly regular basis, last time was about 5-6 years ago, dang near extincted them in the state, only now starting to come back in any numbers, still not enough around to make a trip out here worthwhile.

actually not really most fleas tend to pick a particular host, not just one species of flea, there are a couple thousand....species that specialize in canines tend not to go after rodents unless starving and vice versa.....the fleas your dealing with when skinning yote quite likely do not have plague cause they arent the same species feeding off the prairie dogs....prolly why you really dont hear of any of the thousands of people skining yotes every year coming down with it while those few people fuggin with dead PD's and such are getting it hear and there....

infact the species that feed on rodents are even a whole different genus than those that are generally found on dogs or cats....bout as closely related as say whitetail and elk...both are deer, but are actually very different critters with different needs
