When John first went into business, I sent him a 300 WM for "accurizing" and he did a great job. That was back when the ticket price was $225. I can't say if he got it to shoot better, cause it was a shooter already. Just wanted the piece of mind. It was heading south for the Birdsong Black-T, so it was just an extra stop along the way. That was who Lewis was using anyway for finishing.

I have deal with John for a number of years and he has built a number of rifles for me. Also had him accurize a couple. He has done an exceptional job on all but he is slow, due in part to his work load. Great guy.Rick.

Several years ago I contacted John based on the recommendation of several shooters whose opinion I respected.

I ask him how long it would take to put together a rifle for me if I supplied 100% of the parts ----custom action, barrel, McMillan stock, scope mounts, scope, trigger ---everything.

He quoted me a price and said he would have it completed and back to me in less than 2 months. I agreed and sent him all the parts + a partial payment.

Time goes by ----- 2 months and I call and he said he can't find the barrel I sent so he hasn't done anything. I send him a spare barrel ----- a couple of weeks later I call and he says he's found the original barrel which do I want him to use ---still hasn't done anything. Evidently he never learned to dial a phone.

Bottom line --- well over a year later I get the rifle and the bedding job looks like it was done by someone without opposing thumbs ---- John said send it back and he'd do it right this time ---- told him ho thanks and had a local smith redo it. I also had a hell of a time getting the barrel he didn't use back.

The good side is the rifle shoots like a champ and it's balanced just as I specificed.......the bad side is he's not reliable and after almost 18 months of really lame excuses I wouldn't ever send him anything again.

I would not send John a rifle to work on if he was the last gunsmith on this earth. he did a barrel job bedded my stock and did a trigger job. I had to have the stock rebedded. trigger redone it had lots off creep. also part of his package was to lap scope rings he did not do this. he also told me he broke my swarovski scope and that he would replace it and he did with the wrong scope, he told me this job would take 4-6 months. after a year went by I gave him a call. he said it would be about 4-6 weeks than he did not pick his phone up for 3 months or emails. this went on for another year before I got my gun back it took 27 months and it also came back with the wrong barrel on it. I told him to put a hart barrel on he used a pac nor. all this for$850. then I had to send it out to fix bedding and trigger that cost another $250 and after all of this the gun doesn't shoot that great. this guy is the master of excuses.

I guess when he says "if you want it fast, we can't help you", he really means it.

If someone tells you 18 months and you decide to go ahead then 18 months is OK .... but if someone tells you 2 months and it's 18 then that's a different story....a big-time different story.

John was sick most of last year, he is well & back to work now. He built me a 257 roberts in the 2nd quarter of this year, it took 6 weeks to finish because I ordered & carried him all the parts. Last time I was in this shop he ricieved 4 stocks from Mcmillian, 1 had on order for over a year. He can't build them with out the parts.

They come out of the Aiken, SC corner of the world, which was settled by German gunmakers in the 1700s. John used to work for Kenny Jarrett, who learned a bit from George Herron....

gahuntertom ---this was several years ago and I did provide 100% of the parts and all he had to do was thread and chamber the barrel, install the muzzle brake, bed the stock, tune the trigger, install the scope mounts and have the metal work coated. If a man's sick or has family problems that's something to understand but not returning phone calls and vaue and evasive answers just don't cut it with me.

I'm sure he has many happy customers ...I'm just not one of them.

I will admit that he is very tough to get ahold of on the phone, I had to email him several times. He also was going through a divorce at the time so that might have had something to do with it........Blake

Opening day there will probably be 10 custom rifles at our hunting club.. 1 old Jarette & 9 Carolina Precisions. John's shop is about 10 minutes out of the way when I go to the farm so communications are much easier. I am sorry you have had bad experiences with John.

I'm human so if someone is having problems ....health...women....kids....the tax man or whatever It's easy to understand and be patient but when what little communication occurs has the flavor of "my dog ate my home work" what can a customer think?

I had Carolina Precision barrel a couple of actions for me a few years ago. The work was high quality but they are very slow about getting your work done! I waited over a year for both rifles and I had to return 1 rifle because it had been chamberd with a tight neck that I did'nt ask for. I personnaly woud not reccomend him but it's your time and money!
