Just wondering what the board's opinion is on this company's stocks.
I am looking at purchasing a Target Varminter in Pepper Laminate for my 98 Mauser project. It will be unfinished, and with a 1/2" straight channel. I think the website said $79.99 plus shipping which is far less than the ~$200 I planned on spending at Richards-Microfit.
comments on lead times, shipping, overall apperance, etc are appreciated

The Boyds stock should be perfect for your project. Frankly, I don't know how they make them so cheap. Regards, Rick.

I got a boyds laminate for a yugo mauser last winter and have been happy with it.It only took a few days to get and the inletting was great, should be great for a deer rifle.

I've used 2 of them, a JRS and a varmint/target. Both were excellent. I think they leave you extra wood-especially around the floorplate-since Mausers vary so much I guess. Not a problem to shave it down even.

I just finished a JRS laminate for a MKX. I'm happy with it, nice stock for the $. Only real complaint I have is the fact that I ordered it in March and didn't receive it until August.

I didn't think their lead times were that off. Course Richards quoted up 14 weeks on some of their models.
I think the target/varmint will be the one for me. I like the grip area, vents for the 1" thick barrel, and cheekpiece
thanks all Andrew

Got a JRS laminated to replace the plastic stock on my M70 last week. I am more than pleased with it. Ordered on tues. UPS delivered it on thur. I spent a little time tweaking in the lug. But it was way better than I had expected for the price. Another one for my sons Mark V is in the works. okie

I got a JRS in pepper and a Ross Thumbhole in Nutmeg. I much prefer the nutmeg now that it is finished. Both are good stocks, but they are heavy. Seeing how you are doing a varmint rifle, that's not likely an issue. Good for the money. You'll likely have to do some fitting to get a good inlet. Shouldn't be too big a deal.

I have a large ring action (small rimg threads) action going with a 20+ inch barrel calipered at .900+ at the muzzle, a redfield jr 1 piece base and a 10-40x50 scopy. Will be way heavy which is what I'm going for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have two, a JRS blind mag and a target varmint. THe JRS had a plastic excheon, I replaced it with a metal one. Also sanded down the thickish foreend a bit. The Varmint/target isn't bad but the cheekpiece needed modifying. A friend got one and he agrees that the cheekpiece is not perfect. He is more of a benchrest guy than me and he wished the foreend was wider.
For what you get cannot beat the price.
FYI check out the other color combos available. My JRS is desert camo, much better looking than pepper or nutmeg. So it costs a few $$ more, it won't look like everyone else's.

Savage, if you go with a Boyds let me know how much inletting you have to do. I'm thinking of getting one for a Husky Small Ring, but I'm not sure how much messing around I will have to do. It's also a military stepped barrel, so I'm not sure what barrel contour to get either.

I'm getting the pepper, because I will be doing a candy cobalt blue finish with the black woodgrain showing from underneath. with the lighter browns the same effect isnt reached.

I have one on a varmit rifle and the inletting was almost "drop in". I would like a JRS on my 300 WSM but they are heavy would Boyds hollow out the butt stock ?? -Doc-

I just finished a JRS laminate for a MKX. I'm happy with it, nice stock for the $. Only real complaint I have is the fact that I ordered it in March and didn't receive it until August. That was pretty close to my experience as well. Told it would take 6-8 weeks max, but was told to expect it sooner. Called a few times and was told that it was shipped/being shipped, but finally was told there was a screwup and it hadn't been made yet. That was at either week 11 or week 12, so they were already way late, and was told another 3-4 weeks. I got it after 15-16 weeks of waiting, and while it was nice, they cut the trigger guard slot poorly, it's a little slanted, and the screw holes were off too. I was able to fix it, and in the end, it looks good, shoots great, but I don't know if I will purchase from them again after the poor comunication and the rude response I got. The stock is nice though, and it fits me darn near perfectly, so I might just end up forgiving and forgetting....we will see.

They do have a "lightening" option where they mill out some material from the butt and the forearm channel. Have not seen one done though. Moe

I put my 70 synthetic and the boyds jrs on the digital scale last night. The jrs weighed 4.4 0z more than the plastic. With the 338 it will not be a problem. You guys think that a bedded laminate would need crossbolts on a 338? lost okie
