While all elk in North America belong to the same species,
there are regional variations that are called by different
names. Rocky Mountain Elk get the most publicity, but there
are also Tule Elk in Central California, and Roosevelt Elk
along the coastal mountains of the Pacific, from Northern California
into British Columbia.

Regards,
Scott

As I understand it Roosevelt elk have mustasches, tend to be near sighted and carry big sticks.

BCR

Suspense is over .... Especially for all those of you who get Eastmans Hunting Journal. From the Dec/Jan 2003 issue, is the bull that Rick posted a photo of above. Its the New World Record Roosevelt Bull and was "harvested" by 34 year old high school teacher Scott Ballard ... as his First Ever Bull Elk !!! ..... (all you rookies out there .... there is hope)

The 8x9 bull grosses 417 1/8th and nets 404 6/8th, beating the previous record of 396/change from a bull taken in B.C. in 1997. The scorers noted that both Roosey and Tule elk do not have deducts for tine length differences from the 4th point to the end of the main beams (because these elks antlers often tripod or crown-out beyond the 4th point.) Thats why most of our guesses were low ....yeah, thats it. The elks "Tremendous" main-beam mass also added heavily to his score.

Dont mess with Muley Stalkers or Greenhorns field eye .... they were only a couple points off !!

Mr. Ballards "depredation" tag was one of 33 drawn and he had an 8 month long season to take any one "pesky" elk off any agricultural land in the Willamette valley unit. He shot him at 400 yards, using a 30-06 and Barnes-X bullets (2). Passed up an estimated 350 BnC bull, before he shot this one in a hay field (on private land) and drove the ******** truck right to him.

Guy should go buy a lottery ticket !

S.B.
