Group takes a shovel to Confederate General’s grave

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A group was fed up with waiting, so they got a shovel and dug up a patch of grass next to Nathan Bedford Forrest’s grave and statue in a public park in the Medical District.

The group says they wanted the statue and remains removed for a long time, because he was a Confederate soldier, a KKK leader and a slave trader.

“If he’s gone, some of this racism and race-hate might be gone,” said Isaac Richmond with Commission on Religion and Racism. ” We got a fresh shovel full, and we hope that everybody else will follow suit and dig him up.”

“They can protest all they want. Just because they don’t like it, doesn’t mean they are right. Digging up the park is just pure and simple vandalism,” said Lee Millar, the spokesperson for the Forrest family and Sons of Confederate Veterans.

He said every person who held onto that shovel broke the law today.

“That’s plain vandalism,” he said.

“We really don’t want to make this a confrontation. We just want to say hey, we want to get on with it!” said Richmond.

The City Council agreed to move the statue and the remains.

Now state law requires the Tennessee Historical Commission to sign off.

The issue will have to go before the Chancery Court as well.

The group told WREG if the process took too long, the could take more drastic measures.

“We are going to bring the back hoe, the tractors and the men with the equipment to raise Bedford Forrest from the soil of Memphis,” said Richmond.

I wonder if Isaac Richmond is going to change his name? Richmond appears to be intensely aggravated by the burial site of a man that has been dead and buried for a 138 years, in a location that he never has to see. But, poor Isaac has the same name as the Capital of the Confederate States of America. How can he sleep at night knowing that for his whole life people are going to be referring to him by using the name of Richmond? Seems to me that it would make much more sense to take care of the name change first.

I've suggested a "buyer's strike" in the past but not too many folks pay me much attention because it is easier to talk about armed revolution...at some point in the future of course.

Buy as little as possible from corporations that no longer reflect your values. Buy only necessities such as food and clothing. Patch up your old vehicle. For God's sake, cut off your cable and don't pay to see any movie. This is how Jessie Jackson gets his crap pushed....he shakes down corporate America by threatening boycotts. We have vastly superior numbers to him but just lack the will and organization. One man doing that affects nothing. A million or so is another story.

If everyone in America who is sick of the PC crap would do that, attitudes would be adjusted in a hurry. Start financially punishing the folks who push this crap. Can't believe some of the churches have not done this years ago. But, that would cost us some fun and most people would about rather die or be ran over by the PC juggernaut than give up the latest toy.
