Would like to build a .25-222 (Copperhead).

Which action should I go with ? CZ 527, Remington Model Seven or a plain short action 700.

Should I get a .222 or .223 for the conversion ? I would think the rifles would be the same other than the chambering ?

In all likelihood, unless you are willing to seat the bullets deeply the Mini-Mauser would need the mag box lengthed or cut out and the bolt stop modified to extend the throw (BTDT on a 6TCU).

The 700 is easiest to score parts for.

A push on the 7/700 mag spacer mod versatility,to eek COAL latitude.

Tough to beat a 700 at it's own game................

The shortest of the Sako actions would be great for a rifle in that chambering!

A1's are heavily COAL challenged,as compared to the 600,7,700.

I wouldn't want a fast twist 223AI in one,for that sole reason.

Superlative choice for the 223AI/50gr concoction however.

The Pimp's is a dandy...........................

I'm going to pick up a Remington 700 SPS tomarrow. I'll be shooting the .223 until first of the year. I'm having trouble finding a smith with a Copperhead reamer.

Can't know what about the Copperhead horns you up,as the .224" projectiles make very fine use of 223/223AI capacity(s).

Were I wanting a svelte 25,the 250Sav or 250AI would get the nod.

Reality would preclude that and I'd just build another 25-284 however and mebbe another 223AI to accompany it.

No flies on a light 25-284,it's a Giant Killer.............................

Just bought the Model Seven blue laminate in .223.

I've got a LV SF in 7mm-08 for my go to deer rifle. I've had a four different .250-3000 and also played with the .223, .25-35 Win., 6.8 SPC, 7mm TCU and 6mm BR.

I would like to build the .25 Copperhead and try the 75 gr. X-bullet at round 2,900 fps and load the 60 gr. flat point to around 2,000 fps. Seeing how I traded in my Marlin 983 .22 Magnum on the M-7 I'd like to have a load to duplicate that.

I agree with the advancement in .224 cal bullets over the last 10 years the .223 AI would do it all.

But I've alway's been facinated with the .223 based wildcats and the .25 caliber is my favorite. I made up a dummy .25 Copperhead round and it functions perfectly in the M-7's action.

My Copperhead, now over 20 years old, is on a Sako 461. Have never had magazine length problem. 75 gr HP at around 2900-3000 is very effective on the small farm field woodchucks that make up most of my day to day varmint shooting. Having built this rifle as a sporter it makes a great walking rifle. A lot of days the varmint weight stuff never get any exercise. Loaned it to my Grampa one summer when he got to complainin about the 'chucks in the beans getting to smart for his .22LR. He got 23 with it with 25 shots. Of course he was over 80 at the time!

Somewhere around here I even have the original Guns & Ammo magazine with John Wooters article on his Copperhead.

Great little cartridge if you want something different. I have always thought it looks like a miniature .35 Whelen.

The .257" 75HP is shorter than the XFB. Ogive differs too, though it's moot.

I love Baby Sako's,but not in 25cal.....................

I agree with Stick as to the little Sakos. i made one up in the Copperhead and couldn`t wait to get a 17 barrel and re-do it into a 17/223. Built the Copperhead in a beater 600 and am very happy.

The Baby Sako in 223AI,twisted 1-12" and tossing the 53X at 3600-ish fps, will kill the [bleep] out of alotta things.

And handily....................

Dear Big Stick,
What kind of kill are you getting with the bullets you mentioned? Good enough for these little blacktails here in Or? Maybe I don`t need a 17/223 that bad!

I am not sure the .223 is legal for deer in OR as it is not here in Wa, but have used the 53x and 60 NP on a few deer and speed goats where legal via 22-250 and it has done just fine if one picks their shot well

If your going to use a action like a 600, 700 or a savage you might want to think longer than the 25 Copperhead as sugested the the 250 Savage would be perfect and you can load it down if needed. I built a ,25-204Ruger on a Savage mod 11 action so I could switch back to .223 if needed. The .25-204 is getting 3000fps out of the 87gr Speer Hotcore and 2750 with the 100gr NPT it will be my main deer rifle this season. I'm working up some 75gr HP(for coyotes) loads now, also an 86gr cast bullet load at about 1200fps for small game.

The .25-204 duplicates the .257 Kimber with out having to do all the case forming and is right there with factory loaded 250 Savage ballistics.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I haven't had the chance to measure the box on the Model Seven yet. I did neck up a .223 case to .25 caliber to check the OAL. I'm figuring on a 2.260" total length maybe a touch more.
I'm thinking the .222 based Copperhead would give me a little room to play with cartridge OAL. Would like to focus on the 75 to 90 gr. bullets. I dont believe I'll be giving up to much velocity to the larger .223 case - maybe 150 to 175 fps ?

I'm not trying to duplicate any load. I just like what the Copperhead has to offer in the smaller rifle.

I've got a set of 6mm TCU (6mm-.223 Imp) dies and made a few dummy rounds. It seems to really limit the cartridge length when going with anything over a 75 gr. bullet. Plus that sharp shoulder worries me how smooth it will feed.

I guess if a .223 AI feeds fine then the 6mm TCU should work ?
