Alright, I have a mossberg 800 in .243 with a shot out barrel(it keyholed previously good loads, the last time I shot it). This gun has a lot of sentiemental value to me as it a gift from my favorite grandfather shortly before he passed, but is currently useless.

What would you do? I am thinking about getting a decent barrel put on it and having the trigger worked on... Anybody worked on one of these before? I cannot imagine it being terribly different from a remington as it has a seperate recoil lug similar to the remington and savage designs.

Depends on what you wish to spend.. The rebarrel should be easy but you'll have the better part of $400 added to the rifle.

What would I do? I'd keep it as-is, for sentimental value, and look for a suitable replacement.

The usual questions, aprox. how many rounds fired through the rifle? do you hand load? Is the crown in good condition?
What loads are you using? Has the barrel been cleaned really really good latley. Is the rifle scoped, is the scope ok is it mounted tight?
If you hand load set the bullet a little closer to the rifling, before shooting again scrub the bore and remove all the copper fouling you can. Shoot 90-105 gr bullets, some 243's don't like light bullets. Check the end of the muzzle for dings or damage if there is even a slight nick or ding get it recrowned, this is cheap. Check scope on another rifle and see that all mounting parts are good and tight including the bases. 243 is not an unusually finicky round but they can be if using a light bullet. Rebarreling is no big deal it does cost a couple hundred dollars on up.

I have put upwards of 5000 rounds through the gun... Scope and crown are good. Yes, I handload, and I have tried other loads to see if something was different with the usual components that I was using... Nothing could produce any different results, and considering that I had used the rifle as a varmint rifle in addition to using it to kill my first antelope, deer, and elk, I would assume that based on round count alone, it is time to rebarrel it. I have had it sitting for a couple of years and finally decided that it deserved some attention.

I guess that I shouldn't really call it a turd as it was plenty accurate when it wasn't keyholing.

My Mossy 800 243 with about 200 rounds through it has the smoothest bore of any rifle that I own. If it was mine, I'd send it to Dan Pedersen & have him rebore it to a bigger cal. You'd still have the original barrel & a great shooter.

What Bullwnkl said. If that doesn't work, I would have it bored to 7MM-08 by Dan Pedersen. Thanks...Bill.

I'd do the rebore as well, but I'd consider the .260 Remington cartridge.

Plus 1.

The original barrel with a new bore/chamber could be nice!

You can get a new barrel here http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrProductSKU=806270 in 243. I think they also have 308.

Actually, I agree with you on that point. That Porsche-designed engine is a very decent plant. It's just too bad that so many HD owners equate that gawd-awful flatulent noise with 'cool'. I make that same sound after too much Mexican food.

5000 rounds? Get out.
Lets see, a new cheap barrel installed- 300.00
You get another 5000 rounds out of it, thats a bargain.
Or really go on the cheap and scrounge up a take off barrel and get that threaded.

I thought it was harley thread too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

GPC has new factory Mossberg 800 barrels in 22-250, 243, 308, and 350 Rem Mag for sale for less than $100. You should be about to get a new Mossberg barrel and have it installed for $200+/-. www.gunpartscorp.com
