I just shot in my first groundhog match the other day and found out that my scope doesn't have enough magnification. So I'm looking for a scope to use in matches at ranges up to 300 yards. This scope will be mounted on a 22-250 which I also use for fox hunting so I'm not interested in a fixed power target scope. I would also like to keep the price under $600 and preferably less, but I don't want to waste money on junk. I have no problem with buying a used scope either.

I'm considering one of the vortex vipers.

Any suggestions?

SWFA 3x15 mil quad. I use mine for hunting all the time. Good glass, and rock solid repeatability. Its in your price range too.

Mathman, I currently have a 4.5-14. I think I'll need about 24x to see my bullet holes at 300 yards.

I am also looking at a sightron sii.

Leupold 8.5-25 with duplex or VH reticle would be my choice but I don't have enough info. To get reasonable suggestions, you really need to provide your budget level. Are your target matches at known distances? Size of the target? Do you want to twiddle knobs, hold over, or use a ballistic reticle?

Seeing bullet holes at 300 could be very sketchy depending on the light angle and target color. My 25x Kowa 82mm spotter struggles to see .22/30 cal holes in the black at 200 in certain light. In the white are less of a problem.

Most of the time I can see .25 caliber holes in the target at 300 yards with a Bushnell 4-16X40. I looked through a 4200 4-16X50 the other day when I was testing some loads. I was using my 6500 4 1/2-30X50 and had very little trouble seeing the holes.

I lowered the power to see which power I needed to use the milldots for 400 yards and 500 yards. 17X worked. I could still see the .26 caliber bullet holes at that setting.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I decided to go with the sightron that I have the link to above. It seems like it will fit the bill pretty well and was closest to the amount I wanted to spend.

Sightron S1 4-12x40 AO for under $200.

Weaver V16 4-16x42 A0 for under $350.

I have several of each and they have worked fine for me.
