Good Sirs, Can anyone point me toward information about gunsmiths who modify solid frame 99's either with Savage's takedown pattern or another? I have no Savage knowledge at all but a friend has a notion and an action. I volunteered to try to spy out the situation. Cheers from Darkest California, Ross

Umm.. don't go there. If you want a takedown, buy one. If you want a solid-frame, buy one. Converting one to the other is going to nothing but a lot of money and a lot of headache. Fairly easy to find a t/d 99.. not even that tough to find a t/d 99 that's been bubba'd into a solid frame.
Never seen a solid frame converted to t/d.

If there was a "law" against bubba, than never would a "custom" Savage be born. After all, is a "custom" just a high class bubba? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Thank you all for the quick responses. Do I take it that most would advise that he just scrap his receiver? Seems a waste when we have a couple of fairly gentle gun hammerers around these parts. My own interest is in old blackpowder cartridge rifles, and I certainly appreciate the desire to preserve or restore as responsibly as possible. Freckled Swiss wood rats need love too, and the prosthesis was considered. Maybe it is a case of requiescat in pace here. Cheers from the deluge in California, Ross

You can pick up new stocks and, with a bit of work, new internals for what you need to restore it into a "custom" 99 or back to original as much as possible. It's the effort of turning a solid-frame into a take-down that I don't think you or your friend would be happy with. Or probably the end results either.

Only difference between a takedown receiver and one for a fixed barrel 99 is the cut in the bottom of the receiver ring that matches the groove in the barrel and the indexing lug on the rear forarm metal. Older ones also have the barrel threads cut away at 3 and 9 o-clock to make it a quarter turn takedown. That's not something that's necessary as the latter takedowns didn't have the quarter turn feature. You can make a fixed barrel into a takedown barrel by cutting the groove used to index the barrel into the shoulder. The hardest part of building a takedown 99 is coming up with the takedown barrel lug and the forarm metal and catch. If you'd rather use a takedown receiver to start with I've got a couple beaters that I could probably be talked out of if you've got an FFL to receive one.

Ross, what is the serial number of the receiver? Over the years there were a number of improvements in both design and metallurgy, and in my opinion the earliest receivers, under 90,000, are not worth working with. Those over 266,000 are the best.

Vigillinus, Sorry for the delay. I just got back from the Tulsa shoot. I don't know the vintage of the gun, but I'll pass your observation on to the owner. Thank you for the help. Ross

Never really thought about it that way. I was in the Alstead Gun Shop, opening day of moose season. On the rack behind the counter was an EG with engraved receiver, and sling studs. Sorry, I did not check the serial number. Between 85 and 90%, not figuring the studs (<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />)!!!!! The price,,,,,,,a mere $1550.00. I took a picture, albiet not a very good one. I have been meaning to post it, but I haven't gotten around to it. I will when I get home this evening.
