Zeiss is $629 and leupold is $499. Putting it on a custom 280ai huntng rifle that will be use for deer and mulies out to 500 yards or so. Any others in that price range I should consider?

I had both the 1 inch and 30mm version of the Leupold 4.5-14. Both went on down the road due to sight picture issues. They seemed very difficult to get behind - eye placement was very critical. Haven't tried the HD5 3-15 but I've got 3 of the prior Conquest 4.5-14 scopes and they are among my absolute favorite scopes for my beanfield rifles. In that power range I also have a 30mm tube Meopta 4-12x40 that is fantastic. The #4 reticle in it is amazing.
Those who must raise their voice to get their point across are generally not intelligent enough to do so in any other way.

I'd agree with the assessment on the 1" Leupold 4.5-14 - only Leupold I've owned that I didn't like at all. IMHO anything above 10-12x needs a focus/parallax adjustment.

Where exactly are you finding an hd5 3-15 for $629? Even the demos are $699

I have only had one 4.5-14 Leupold, and it was just ok to me.
I have several of the Zeiss HD5, including two 3-15x42. I really like them a lot. I would go with the Zeiss if you can.

I had a VX 3 on my 25-06 AI that went back into the box after I bought a Zeiss HD 5 3-15 , bought a 2-10 VX 6 last year and it pretty much blew the VX 3 away . The VX 6 and HD 5 have about the same field of view on low power. The 4-14 VX 3 is okay , but I like the HD 5 better . More eye relief side focus and thinner reticle.
