Hi Winpoor, Great photos! I just thought I'd post that rifle. I would love to own a Hathcock 70 one day. You only go around once...a rifle missed is a rifle lost...I could say that about something else, but I'll keep it clean. take care p.s. That Woodsman is on my list. p.p.s Check this out a 1920's Winchester sniper rifle. I keep dreaming that Grandma has one rat-holed somewhere. http://jamesdjulia.com/item/lot-103...gfield-armory-type-2-sniper-rifle-39207/

The model 54 's could be had with a 26" med heavy "sniper" barrel, the few that were carried over into the mod 70's are the holy grail... very ,very few exist! I have never seen or held one! very best WinPoor

Some nice pics and shots made with those winnys. Is there a reason you wanna go for the bull barrel winpoor? I thought Carlos used a standard barrel on his first tour, did he use a bull on his second?

Mr FRST, All his guns were Winchester med heavy target profile. Either Factory or Douglas XX in same profile. They would open the sporter stock to fit the target profile. A few used the std. marksman stock, most were low comb sporter stocks. He would keep the 8X Unertl wrapped in plastic to keep moisture out till hunting, shooting time!! very best WinPoor

I studied this guy and read every thing I could get my hands on vis him, good man, he would lay in a bed of ants for hours to get, make the shot!He would say the guns were 2 MOA with the $hit ammo , but he got his hands on good stuff and shot a lot tighter than 2 MOA!!! the very best WinPoor

Is 59000 a little late for the original Model 70 purchase? Not that it is a big deal, however. That looks like a nice pre-war rifle to start with. To answer a question by Stuvwxyz, the Unertl mounts would use the existing holes in the receiver and the other set would be on the barrel. Winpoor, Bartlein for the barrel? Frank Green just built a similar rifle so I know they have the right specs.

I have one good eye. Does that count???
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I would buy standard grade Model 70 .30-06 from late 50s (scope use friendly stock) and Redfield USMC M-40 scope ($400 at SWFA site). Another option is limited edition M700 with matte metal bull barrel, oil finished stock, alloy butt plate and large military sling loops. It was offered as repro of US Military Sniper rifle. The Remington was designed to be used with Lake City 7,62x51 match ammo.

I may fudge there but every Douglas XX barrel Ive ever shot was killer as well! v best winpoor

Mr Pipewhiner, in a perfect world 48,000 and under would be the cats azz!, I also have a list of General, or Col Van Ordens snipers, I had an 06 Target one(1) GD sn away , it did not shoot as good as my 56' so I sold it! This Guns America Im thinking of buying goes against the grain, I hit the buy now on a sniper that had been in a corner for 30 or 40 or 50 years, thought it was mine, called the seller Monday morning at 7 am and he told me he sold it 20 min earlier! I told him I had hit the buy now button, he said he had not looked at the computer and went by phone calls! it was a Van Orden with a non checkered sporter stock! I thought G A worked like GB, if you hit buy now it was yours! WRONG!!!! Ive got photos of that gun somewhere, it still runs my BP up just thinking about it!!! This old FK knew what he had, he did not even bother to wipe the dog dam thing down , gone at his price in less than 24 hrs!!! LOL very best winpoor
