I really like the .280 caliber and recently passed on my Browning Stainless Stalker. I am a reloader and I guess I am looking for some testimonies from this vast pool of experience. I can probably swing 7-800$ and kept my 3.5-10X Conquest scope to mount on it.
Whats out there in .280 besides a Browning SS that you would reccommend? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In a right hand rifle just about all make chamber the 280. The Ruger is a sweet little rifle. My nephew just got one. I am partial to Rugers though. Some here arn't. MHO

There's a 700 Mnt rifle in .280 at a local shop.
Older model with walnut and floorplate.

New or used? Price?
Is it a place that would ship to another FFL?

Thanks Teeder! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Ron Shirk's has a special price on the 700 CDL in 280 for 500, about 100 less than the other chamberings.

Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

Googled for an answer and have come to the conclusion that the 77 is the way to go here on the mentioned budget. Though may have driven a Browning Stainless Stalker, Ruger MK II stainless, Rem Mountain Rifle, and customs on the 700 action in 280 once.

Thanks for the info Sitka...I checked with Shirks and it was only there on paper...
They may bring out a 700 CDL SF out in .280 in the future...That would be REALLY APPEALING to me! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Tom,

If you're gonna handload, you'll love the .280Rem.

I have a couple of them. Actually, might be willing to part with one too. If I did it would be the Rem 700 CDL.

I have one of the Matos in a .270 (wanted it in a .280 but couldn't find one at the time this one came along at a great price). They are excellent guns. It is one of the few guns with a detachable mag that looks good and functions very well. The release is in the trigger guard just like a floorplate release and the mag fits flush and looks like a regular floorplate. The rifle is no lightweight though.

I have a Ruger 77 Mk II stain/lam in 280 and love it. I need no other rifle (wants are a different animal).

Just hurt a guy I work with's heart,over lunch,via 280Rem vs 300Wby debate.

He said Factory Wby 220's were the endall in trajectory and energy...so I grabbed my laptop.(grin)

That the 162A-Max so humiliated his chambering, caused me to run 165XLC numbers for him,so he didn't jump offa bridge.

He's learnin'.........................

The thing that doesn't hurt about the .280 is what it does to your shoulder.. A rifle of reasonable weight and fit is a real joy to shoot in this chambering.

I also have 2 .280's one in the CDL and the other a 17 year old Model 700 mtn rifle that is my favorite and gets used the most. Killed a lot of deer with it and it is nice to carry all day. If you handload you will really like the .280. Good luck.

Another testimonial for the .280 from me! Mine is in a Ruger #1B -- the first and best of a long line. No deer has walked away even a step from an encounter with a Hornady 140 gr. Bang-flop, game-overs, one and all -- from about 270 yards to about 50 yards. Great round.

If you want some real warm fuzzy on the .280, read some of Jim Carmichael's writings on the caliber- it has been his lifelong favorite.
