That almost looks like a barrel nut with a hole for a spanner wrench. I could be wrong.

That occurred to me, but looks kinda sloppy for something done on purpose. Might go into the barrel.

I sent a picture to the manufacturer asking them what it is. A place for a spanner to bite makes sense. It is sloppy though.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

An index mark to shorten the the process of setting the head-space when swapping barrels? I would agree that whatever it is, it does look sloppy.

A hole to install a pressure sensor? Or maybe a hole for the barrel nut wrench?

It looks like the barrel nut has a small hole that aligns with a detent drilled in the barrel. Tighten the nut and lock it in place by stamping the smaller outer hole into the larger detent? I'd assume corporate doesn't want the consumer to re-barrel the rifle.

Yessir. Rem260, I am now the owner of a Mossberg ATR. How about that? It took a clearance price of $147 new in the box to get me to bite, but I did. I am going to put a Boyds Laminated stock on it. I should have a pretty decent rifle for $270. I bet she'll shoot.

Looks like the barrel nut was staked to the barrel once headspace was established.

A turd by any name is still a turd. Mossbergs are known for their accuracy, they rival Tikkas.

It's official. I missed the selfie deadline so I'm Maser's sock puppet because rene and the Polish half of the fubar twins have decided that I am.
