After encountering the thread about 4198’s, I ended in the local “big city” day before yesterday and checked a couple of local stores. Both had new 1-pounders of IMR4198, the outside identical in every way—except one said “Made in Canada” and the other “Made in Australia.” Apparently it’s being made in both places at once!

Remington/Dupont set the powder factory up in Mulwala in New South Wales just prior to WWII and had long ties with Australia. And before WWI Pratt and Whitney setup the Enfield manufacturing plant in Lithgow Australia. The Australians have a long history of thumbing their noses at the Brits and buying American. Ammo Imperative: Australia Modernizes Mulwala Facility http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/ammo-imperative-australia-modernizes-mulwala-facility-03367/Feb 23/11: Thales Australia and the USA’s General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD OTS) sign a long-term strategic teaming agreement to cooperate in the Australian ordnance market. Under the 10-year agreement, General Dynamics will deliver “significant technology transfer” to Thales in Australia, while Thales will leverage its U.S. partner’s expertise through its existing munitions contracts. Meaning AR2207, H4198, and IMR4198 are now one in the same powder. And all three powders now contain Vegemite Below MSDS sheets show the powder being made in Canada and in Oz. https://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/MSDS%20Files/Smokeless/IMR/IMR%20Singles%20Base%20-%20Canada.pdfhttps://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/MSDS%20Files/Smokeless/IMR/IMR8208XBR%20%28AR2210%20V02%29.pdf Anyone want to buy a second hand Crocodile Dundee Magnum Roo Light.

Big Ed,
Yeah, I’m familiar with the history of the Thales and General Dynamics plants.
But the MSDS for Aussie IMR4198 shows it as AR2215, not AR2207. And the Aussie H4198 powder is a “short-cut” version, and the Aussie IMR4198 is a “long-cut” version (I have recent batches of both on hand). And the Hodgdon loading data for H4198 and IMR4198 varies considerably in certain cartridge/bullet combinations, but not much in others. Yet they’re all the same powder?
Now I’m going to have to buy a pound of the Canadian IMR4198 and do some testing with all three 4198’s, and also have a talk with my friends at Hodgdon. I also happen to have an unopened can of the original H4198, which might make yet another interesting comparison.

Mule Deer The information I posted came from the ADI powder equivalent chart listed below and 2215 is no longer on the chart. And I was guessing about all three powders being the same because I couldn't see them making three powders with the same burn rate. (standardization between the U.S and Oz) If I'm wrong then you can serve me crow. http://www.adi-powders.com.au/handloaders/equivalents.aspAnd don't say "Thales" too loudly, the Australians don't like the idea of the Frogs owning their powder company.

We’ll see what the head powder guy at Hodgdon can reveal.
I do tend to use ADI when writing about the Australian powders, because that’s what the Aussies I know call ‘em!

Based on my experience with Vegemite, even that hot piece of toast wouldn't improve anything.

Got the word straight from the head powder technician at Hodgdon, who says IMR4198 and H4198 are made to slightly different specs. All IMR4198, whether from Oz or Canada, is “a continuation of the old DuPont version,” including granule size. The Aussie H4895 is a short grain version so burns a little differently, which is why the load data differs.

I don’t care about the dipschidt, who always seems to put in his two cents whether or not it has anything to do with the question, or whether his Googling came up with anything relevant.
But other people were also interested, and I posted for them, not him.

I think I know whose posts on this thread are relevant and who's trolling.

Don't let the pests bother you Mule Deer. I'll bet even O'Connor had to deal with trolls now and then. But he could just throw their letters in the round file!

Mule Deer When you use words like "dipschidt" your also saying you think your the only person who knows how to pull the handle of their reloading press. The "dipschidt" told someone here to remove their expander and half his runout disappeared. Now look where neck sizing has taken this forum. A gunwriter calling people "dipschidt", very well done Mule Deer, and a class act. You certainly know how to set the standards here and help make this forum what it is. Its called in the military a Charlie-Foxtrot aka (Clusterfu*k) Dear Wolf Publishing Please read this posting and think about your publishing company's image. Signed "dipschidt" who's going to advise people to stop reading your Magazines.

Thanks for doing your best to ensure that those not so informed, now are.
