The old timers who remember the heyday of this mounting system are pretty much gone. Nowadays most cringe at even the mention of a rifle so equipped. Back in the day it was considered quite foresighted to spend the dough to have the best of both worlds. While I highly appreciate completely factory original 70s I have been able to embrace an otherwise pristine rifle sporting a G&H, the result of which has been acquiring minty specimens of late 40s and early 50s rifles that sported this mount. An unfired transition Hornet with checkering so sharp it almost cut your skin was one that comes to mind.
While I prefer guns w/o the mount I've been able to accept the fact that many gun nuts of the day saw the value of being able to use irons if the need arose.
Anyone else share my tolerance for a mount whose days have passed?

I have G&H mounts on my .35 Whelen Super Grade M/70 and on my Springfield 1922 M2. They are great mounts, the Springfield has a Lyman Alaskan with 2 minute LEE dot and the M/70 has a Lyman All American Perma Center 4x also with 2 minute LEE dot. They are two of my favorite rifles, I would not hesitate to acquire more rifles equipped with Griffin & Howe mounts.

Ive tried to like em , I just cannot! the gun is better with them on than removed! I do understand the why, scopes were not as reliable in that day. They just hurt! very best WinPoor

Sorry Bob, just not into them.
Did I ever tell you about the high condition, pre-war SG Hornet topped with a Unertl that I left behind at a shop in Quakertown? Price was right, but just couldn't get past the G&H mounts....

I like the option of being able to remove the scope quickly and easily. I have two top halves for my G & H mount on my .35 Whelen S.G. M/70, one has a Lyman Alaskan sighted for shooting cast bullets and the other has a Lyman All American sighted for shooting jacketed hunting loads. When I want to shoot cast bullet practice loads I mount the ALaskan, switching to jacketed hunting loads is as simple as slipping the All American into place. Both remain sighted in for their respective ammo.

My Brno 21h has a G&H mount installed by G&H,ive taken the scope off multiple times and zero has never changed.I had the original safety replaced with a three position Gentry, which is much more user friendly.

Have 2 for a transition P-64 M-70 375 H&H, Great idea which I see as very consistent with the optical technology and thinking of knowlegeable hunters of the period.
The original mount that came with the rifle has a 2x original Weaver and the one I added has a Leupold 1.75-6x. Both work well though I prefer the latter on a 375.
