I found a straight walled cartridge stamped "SAVAGE 300 S.A. CORP" Has anyone seen or heard of a 300 savage blown out straight walled?

Never heard of it. A straight walled .300 Savage would be about .45 caliber.

Might very well have been a 300 Sav. misused in a 30-06. According to Speer book it would be blown out straight. Check the mouth dia against the shoulder dia on the 06'. Muddy

You might be on to something. As far as I can tell (mouth is slightly dented) it is about the same diameter as the shoulder of an 06'. it is shorter than a 300 by 30 thou or so and has what appears to be crimp marks close to the mouth though. I found it way deep in the back country, far from anywhere. Hunting for sure.

Never heard of a straight wall 300 Savage wildcat. I would also guess it's likely it was shot out of a 30-06 or 270 or something along those lines. Didn't sound too disastrous if there were no bones lying beside the case. Probably been lying there quite a while, since headstamps of S.A. CORP haven't been made for a while.

Shoulder on 300 is .448 and .441 on an 06, I would think it is feasible that the shoulder of the 300 was stopped someplace on the taper of the 06 to provide "headspace" contact and hold the case head against front of the bolt. I've got some 300 cases and an 06 so might give it a try and let you know. Muddy

Sweet Jesus, I'm talking about a STRAIGHT WALLED 300 Savage case Same as any other rimless straight wall case, the case mouth. And yes, there have been some straight wall rimless rifle wildcats though they have never been terribly popular and are more of a one off I wonder if this will work deal.

I've always thought a .40 on a straight cased .240 Wby. would be a winner, kind of a 400 Whelan clone. Muddy
