My dad is going on his 1st elk hunt in September out in Colorado, and is going to use my 7 Mag. Do any of you have any suggestions on bullets for elk. I thought i heard that Federal is making a 175 gr. fail safe, which i would think optimal. Any of you having experience with 7 and elk, your preference of bullet and performance would be most appreciated. thanks.

Butterball
Federal doesn't load the Fail Safe winchester does. That being said, Federal does offer a 160gr. loading in both Nosler Partition and Trophy Bonded, both of which will perform fine. Winchester loads 160gr. Fail Safes and their Partition Gold which will do fine. The other choice I would look at is a Remington 160gr. SAF. All of these loads will do fine in the 7 mag. Find one that shoots good and practice. Anyone of these in the right spot and your dad will be bragging about a big bull.........GH

I agree with Greenhead 100%. You might want to point out to your dad that elk don't fall down as readily as deer. They can, and do, travel hundreds of yards when shot through the lungs. They're tough. And no shooting them in the fanny. They can go a long way when gut, or fanny, shot. E

The 154 grain Hornady has the same S. D. as their 180 grain .30 caliber bullet. That indicates to me that the penetration will be similar. Most folks think the .30 caliber 180 grain bullet is plenty good for elk, which are tougher than deer but aren't bulletproof.

butterball,
Remington sells a safari load with swift bullets. Federal sells a premium load with trophy bonded bullets.
Pick the most accurate load of the two, give your dad two boxes of the stuff, and as long as the bullet is in the right place, the beast will go down ...
olivier
