I havea 375 ruger guide gun. How much better is the the top of the line scmidt and bender than a leupold vx6? The s&b are insanely expensive but are they that good. And if i was to get something under $1500 would u reccomend the vx6? I will be hunting a variety of animals in the future, but for where i live i will be shooting deer at the max range of 300 yards. But i want a scope with capabilities of much further distances, and good light transmission. Thanks in advance

Hello,

Schmidt Bender glass is incredible. The clarity, sharpness, color and brightness are hard to beat. Yea they are pretty far up the fiscal food chain but I'd say for about $1500, you can get a great scope from Swarovski or Meopta. Both of those will have better glass than the comparably priced Leupold.

In a heartbeat I would recommend a VX-6 for the money!

Since you're new here I will say, welcome. Then in true campfire optics form I will give you a little education on optics.

I purchased a Nightforce 12-42X56, a Bushnell 6500 4 1/2-30X50, and a Swarovski z5 5-25X52. I made a line chart to compare them. At about 520 yards the Nightforce didn't need to be moved from 12X fro me to see the lines and spaces. The Bushnell needed 15 1/2X and to my surprise and chagrin since it cost the most, needed 16 1/2X. The Nightforce blows them away in low light performance. The Swarovski blows away the Bushnell for low light performance.

When the Leupold VX-6 came out I purchased a 4-24X52. It has better color than the z5 and beats the 6500 for needing magnification to see the same detail. The VX-6 matches the z5 for low light performance. Also the Leupold is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the z5.

All these tests, except the first one, were conducted on eye charts and deer antlers over 100 yards away.

For beyond 300 you have two main scopes with BDC that have great glass and TDC reticles thats the Kahles and Swaro.

I don't do TDC reticles as they are not as precise as dialing. I tried them years ago, just didn't work out.

For dialing its very hard to beat NF for the price and everything else as well.

Derek,

Welcome to the Campfire!

I bought a S&B PMII 10x42 from you guys a few years ago. It resides atop my 6.5 SAUM and works extremely well.

Sounds like a great combination for open-country hunting.

I've got the same rifle and chose the Leupold vx6 as the best package. Mine is the 1-6x. While it's a great scope, I wish I would have gone with the 2-12 version. Not a whole lot of functional difference between the low end magnification, but the 12x would be a really nice option to have for working at the range if nothing else.
