Found out over the last few weeks I have a sizable tumor on my right kidney. About the size of a softball. Finally got to surgeon yesterday and he told me no way to save kidney it's all gotta come out. Not looking for any pity just wondering if anybody is living with one and if there are any differences. Found it by accident actually while I was getting an MRI of my lower back. Imagine my surprise when they informed me I had a rather large mass on my kidney. I have been told from what they can see from imaging it hasn't gone "downriver". Guy doing the cutting got his doctorate from Yale so I'm pretty confident in his skills and he drew a dumb truck driver a picture HAHA. Says pretty good chance he can do it with the robot so the healing will be quicker. First guy I went to was gonna crack me open so always get the second opinion boys. Thanx

Yup, I only have one. Had a spectacular motorcycle accident back in 1979 that destroyed my right kidney. I've been living a normal life for 36 years on just one with no complications due to the loss of the destroyed kidney.

That didn't happen in Spanaway on Hwy 7, back in 79, where a lady pulled out in front of you in an old 66 or 67 Pontiac was it? know the guy lost a kidney in it.... I was on scene on that...giving med support.. just wondering...

My grandmother died at 96 years old with one kidney 40 years prior! I think you'll be even better!
Blessings to you on a quick recovery!

Have a cousin that was born with 1 kidney. He is 62 now and it has never been presented even the slightest problem for him.

I've got a friend who's been living the past two years without any kidneys and he's living a productive life.
Good luck with your impending surgery, praying for a speedy recovery.

Lots of people live long normal lives with just one but it does take you off the short list as a donor if a relative needs one.

Son-in-law had one removed when he was 7 or 8 years old. He's now pushing 50 and still healthy as a horse.
Wishing you good luck with your surgery and subsequent recovery!

Like Fourwinds post, my 88 year old aunt was born with just one kidney and is still living independently and engaged in many volunteer activities.

Interesting timing for this question, my right kidney was removed 3 weeks ago.
I am 3rd generation, 4th person in my family with kidney cancer. The first was elderly and the cancer was found in a very late stage, unfortunately, he passed away from it. The second was in his late 40s and the 3rd was in her late 30s, both have survived 28 years with a single kidney.
If your cancer is contained, you will probably not need any further treatment and the outlook is very good. I wasn't that lucky.

Not me, but my wife had one removed about 20 years ago that was cancerous. She has a lot of health problems but none are related to the loss of the kidney. miles

I know 2 guys without a kidney. Both removed due to cancer. One guy had his removed over 10 years ago. The other guy about 2 years ago. Both tell me they don't miss the removed kidney and all is well.
K20350, Godspeed and hoping for a successful surgery and quick healing.

Technically, yes, I have one kidney, but it's the same size as 2 kidneys. It's a horseshoe kidney. It's what happens when the single large kidney we're born with doesn't separate into 2 separate kidneys as we develop.
That aside, I hope everything goes as well as possible for you, k20350.
