I thought I might be a bit early but I'm getting pretty excited, I missed my Colorado Elk hunt I'm itching to get hunting (going into withdrawal). I'm down to picking rifles and extra clothes for season.

I plan to take my little Marlin 25-20 and some hot 75 grain loads, my Marlin 38-55 with hand loads and of course my trusty shotgun (870 cantilever slug gun)... In the past I've nearly always used a Rem 700 in 308 and a second Rem 700 in various chamberings (223 rem - 375 H&H) but thought I'd try some lever guns. (I may take my 308 this time too, still thinking on it, I hate to leave it home.)

I'm also trying to figure on what extra clothing I might need to pack, maybe some rain gear.

From what I've seen in October, you better be packin' some serious insulated stuff, top to bottom.

I'm just hoping to see some deer. Last year the only thing we saw was wolf tracks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Last year went well for me and my hunting partner, we ended up with at least 4 that I can easily recall and the weather was not bad as I recall.

I hunt in Pepin County the first few days then a bit in Dunn (shotgun zone) then we just head out to where ever strikes us. Up to Sawyer/Rusk for a bit and a little down near Black River Falls seems to be about normal. The Tiffany Bottoms near Nelson is generally interesting with a ton of folks chasing deer all over but I'm not sure we'll get in there this time...(it makes for an ugly drag though).

I've been thinking it might be a little cold but I'm more concerned with rain then cold... I hate hunting soaked to the bone.

Don't fret the cold. It'll be 60 deg on opening day.

We were in the Chawamagon this weekend in Ashland Co. Plenty cool. Straight line winds knocked the schitt out of our haunts this summer, so not much deer sign. Some trails and turds but no rubs and scrapes in there yet. I know there rubbing because I found some near home. Who knows maybe I'll see a few more wolves this year.

It could be. Had a few openers where we hunted in orange T-shirts. Then there were a few where zero would have been toasty.. I think the worst was in the mid 1970's. 14-16 inches of snow and -20 on the temp scale..

A common wolf term in the U.P is "SSS". Shoot - shovel - shutup.

T-zone I'll beheading up to the Cable area for the season this year . My family will be getting together there. I'll be testing a new wildcat i've developed, a 25-204. My brotherinlaw lives there.

I mostly been thinking about getting up there and cleaning up the asian beetles and otherwise getting the cabin ready. Am expecting a nice crowd this year. My young hunting buddy got married this summer and his pregnant bride and new father-in-law are coming for the first time. Should make for an interesting deer camp! (Sawyer county)

erich,

We have some family in the Cabe area. Lots of deer there for sure. I used to go to Cabe a lot to Mt. Bike. They hold the Fat Tire Festival there every fall which is a lot of fun to watch/ participate in. Good luck up there. Let us know how the wild cat works out, it sounds pretty cool.

I was thinking about going in Buffalo county. I contacted an outfit last December and they got back to me in May. Hell I had already booked a hunt in Alberta by that time.
Maybe I need to learn more patience.
I will probably eventually hunt those big Wisconsin bucks.

I go up to Alberta with North River Outfitting but also enjoy my time in Wisconsin...

Wisconsin is the vacation & visit family hunt, I get a few nice bucks, all-in-all I have a better time in Wisconsin but I get better bucks in Alberta.

LOL. I thought I was bad using my 338 WM. Got one last weekend with it, durring the 4 day. Should have taken a pic of the exit hole..

3 weeks and 2 days 'till the next opener. This is the best time of year. Hunt, hunt, and hunt some more. Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec...Couldnt ask for more than that! Did I mention 4 free either sex tags per day, in certain zones? Oh yeaaaahhhh!

Do it today. Tomorrow there may be a law against it.
