Getting ready for the 2002 Michigan Rifle Season. Taking my 1955 99 F in 300 Savage with a 2.5X Weaver as my main gun. Also taking my 1917 22 Hi Power takedown with Norma Factory 5.62X52 Rimmed 71 grain folder along with some 70 Grain Hornady handloads I have worked up for some closer broadside shots at 60-70 yards. I took my deer last year with my 1925 "G" model 99 in 303 Savage using a 150 grain Hornady Interlock loaded to 30-30 velocity. Hit the doe broadside through the lungs at 60 yards and she went on a mad death sprint for 60-70 yards before she piled up. Really looking forward to useing my Savages with handloads that I have developed. What are the rest of you using this season in your area of the county?

The deer season opens Saturday in Minnesota. My main rifle is 99M(DL) 1962 vintage in .358. I like this a lot as a great whitetail & black bear rifle in timber country with low power scope. Back-up rifles are 1899 250-3000 (1916 vintage) and 1899C in .303 (1909 vintage). Both of these have Lyman tang sights. I don't reload and so use factory ammo - however getting difficult for .303!

I'm hunting a 1899 Model A in .30-.30 mostly, all original. Back-up is a 1939 RS in .250-3000.

I'll be taking my 99G in .300 to the woods when the Wisconsin season opens the 23rd. My father had it drilled and tapped in 1964 so it also wears a Weaver K2.5. I'll be taking my last dozen or so Winchester 150 grain Silvertips. Have done a lot of handloading for the .300 Sav but the 150 grain Silvertips have always worked well for me so I've stayed with them as long as I could get them. I've also decided to take my 99-358 along in case I get the opportunity to try to fill the second tag.

If it gets to me in time, I'm going to take my new (used) $325 .284 Model 99F, the rifle that ROTR posted about last week. If it doesn't arrive in time, maybe I'll shoot some does with in during January in the NE late season.

Otherwise, the same old tried and true stainless and plastic Remington Models 7 and 700 in 22-250 and .260 will be called upon to harvest my annual allotment of whitetails.

How does your Model 7 or 700 in 22-250 work on whitetails? My local gunsmith gave me the go ahead for using a 22 Hi- Power based on his actual experiece with the cartridge... I would think that the 22 250 would also be adequate, however with less bullit weight than my 71 grainers.

300,

I have harvested a couple of dozen one hundred (100) pound whitetails with the .22-250 without a hitch. They were all shot at ranges from fifty (50) to two hundred (200) yards in open country. I've used 55 grain Nosler BTs, 60 grain Nosler Partitions, and 64 grain Winchester Power Points. Although none of the deer went more than a few yards and none required a second shot, there are many better choices. A suitable Barnes "X" bullet might be the best choice in a .224 deer rifle, but that is speculation on my part.

ROTR,

I guess that we won't know until it arrives here in MO!

That is why I asked you if your comment about passing on it was tongue in cheek, since I'd can't think of a good reason to pass on almost any Model 99 chambered in .284. I had assumed that it was the more common Model 99 C, but when I heard that it was a Model 99 F, the deal appears to have improved by a point or two!

If I decide not to keep it, I'll cheerfully give you the right of first refusal for my cost, plus shipping to your dealer in GA. Does that sound fair?

I appreciate it!

I am really interested in other calibers, but that one was pretty neat!

I think you'll be pleased.

Took a 10 point this morning with the 1904 Model A. 18" spread, right horn almost looks like it was cracked while in velvet...and grew ackwardly downward. About a 80 yard shot in HEAVY brush...all I could see was a little of his neck and his left antler. Took the neck shot... 125 grain bullet. He dropped in his tracks. Trying jerkey this time too...for the desert trip I'll make New Years. This rifle now has: a 10 point, a turkey, and a coyote...my Dad would be smiling on that one!

I will be in New Hampshire next Saturday with my son, who is 13 (his first real hunt) and I will have my 1899 model A 303 Savage...made in 1899 (sorry guys...it's a shooter) and my son will carry an 1899H carbine in 30-30, made in 1911. Both guns are tack-drivers. The 303 will have 180 grain Speer reloads, and the 30-30 will have 170 Speer reloads.
Good luck to all!

Got my first Savage 99 about a month ago from a friend. EG model, 300 Savage caliber, made in 1941. Had to move rear sight to the right a little and lower it one notch to get it to hit right for me. But I managed to get a 2-inch 4-shot group at 50 yards with it, and I consider myself to be only average at the range. I have been shooting 150 grain Remington Core Lokt Pointed Soft Point ammunition (the only 300 Savage ammunition I could find in my town). I am really impressed with the rifle.

I will mostly carry a model F in 250. It has the little flip up tang sight that I love so much.

But I will also carry a model H 22HP. I have never hunted with it yet, but it wears a little Stith and weaver j2.5 that Lightfoot was kind enough to sell to me. Shoots nice, and I may just carry it close to home so that I can shoot squirells too.

NYS,

there may not be much squirrel left if you zap him with that 22 HP.

If you do get one let us know how much is left, percentage wise that is.

I am thinking head shots! Also I am about to start reloading and was considering low power reloads with cast bullets. The 250 is clearly better for deer, and I have no place to varmint hunt with the HP, so a centerfire squirell gun may just be what I have.
