If you are 20 ft in a tree in the middle of the woods, would you hear or see the deer first?(on average)

In the woods, I would have said definitely my ears 20-30 years ago. Now it might be a toss-up. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I hear the deer 1st, almost always. I rarely see them 1st, but I hunt way in the sticks, so visibility isnt always good.

I typically hear them first as well. This year there are tons of tree rats running and eating on the ground as well as splashing in the creek. They are messing with my head. I think a deer is barreling through the brush, but nope its another squirrel. I wonder what a squirrel would look like after a .35 remington hit 'em?

Up untill about 5 years ago, I always heard them first, usually from quite a distance away. Now, I lost my high frequncy hearing, I can only hear them about 50 ft. away.
Funny thing though, my eyesight seems to have compensated for my hearing loss and it seems that I am able to pick a deer out in the woods better than when I had good ears.

You aint a kiddin' on them rats. Not sure about a .35 rem, but I can tell you firsthand what a .338 WM does - The exit hole is also the entrance hole LOL

As for the question - I normaly hear the deer before I see them, assuming no recent rains. It is for this reason I refuse to wear a stocking hat or hood that covers my ears.

Do it today. Tomorrow there may be a law against it.

I'd say hear them.

I was out the last Sat of muzzy season and thought the squirrels were awfully loud. Well come to find out the ruckus was from 2 deer headed my way!

Stupid me wasn't thinking or I'd have looked for em and gotten into position. Insead all I saw was the south end of a north bound deer.

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.
