Well, tomorrow is the day. Our weather the first part of archery has been less than perfect, but the last week or so has been decent. Tomorrow promises to be cool with a slight breeze from the North. Conditions couldn't be better for the opener.

With all the recent pic of member s with some nice animals has been making me jealous. Maybe in the next few days I'll post a little somethin somethin.

Anyway, feel free to post your primitive firearms kills on here as well. I use the word "primitive" loosely.

primitive?
do you have to dress up in skins and kill them w/ clubs?
what constitutes a primitive arm? a 96 gustav mauser is more primitive than an inline ML or a compound bow.

This is my first post on this sight, couldn't resist this category. My son, 11 years old) shot his first buck this primitive season in Canadian county. Seems we sure had nice weather this year except the last Sunday. Just so happened that a big buck came right under our stand at 6:13a.m.. Could only see the whites of his antler's. Hope we see him this Saturday when Gun opens.

I rooted around, and then downloaded the pdf of the regs. P.12 has the muzzleloader description: .40" or larger bore, flint or percussion (shotgun primers OK), BP, substitutes or smokeless powders, single ball or bullet, scopes or iron sights, inlines allowed.

Sounds like fun!

I usually call it "muzzleloader season" I admit it is not too primitave. I shoot a T/C Omega. I do not use a scope and only shoot round balls, mostly because I find them more accurate than the sabots. My son uses the first gun I ever owned, a trapper .50 cal. muzzleloader. Bought it at a sam's club prob about 25 years ago for around $90.00. Wish I had a couple more of those because they sure shoot well for the distance we need.

Winchesterfan,

I shoot an iron-sighted rifle too, but it is mostly because the states I hunt deer in (California and Colorado) don't allow scopes. A friend who does a lot of archery hunting was planning a hunt in Oklahoma this year, and I have seen several photos of nice OK bucks taken this year too. Sort of piqued my interest as it were. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

It seems we have a lot more deer in Oklahoma these days, but where I hunt in central Ok, I am not lucky enough to see many monsters. Last year I shot my biggest buck, a 10 pointer and although I would not trade him, I was surprised when he only weighed 121lbs field dressed. They have pictures in the paper of big deer, but they don't show themselves to me. I am thinking the buck that came right under our stand a couple of weeks ago is very nice, judging form the shadow of his body, but it was too dark to see and shoot and could only tell it was a buck b/c part of the white antlers were visable. This buck was 7 feet from us and 17 feet down. Pretty cool and we (my 11 yr old) are really hyped about Gun season opening in 3 days. I'd say the odds are slim we will see him again, but I know for sure we will not see him from the couch at home!! Oklahoma is a neat state for hunting deer as the topography is vastly different in dfferent parts of the State. I am also noticing some shows on the Outdoor channel that feature hunts in Oklahoma. I have a wildlife ecolgy degree from OSU and back in the 80's, I saw many nice deer on the McAlester Army ammunition plant on a field trip. Have not been lucky enough to draw a hunt there however. Good luck hunting where ever you find yourself hunting deer!!

Further out west is good too. Look at Canadian River Hilton, an old stomping ground before it went commercial.

I am not sure what you mean by "canadian river hilton". I hunt about 6 miles south of the North Canadian River. I would like access to the river itself, but do not have that. Got to make due with what I have.

Rocket1-what part of Oklahoma are you hunting in? Did you see a lot of deer this year?
