obummer is saying that that Master Sgt. Wheeler DIDN'T die in combat. that's because the US has withdrawn from Iraq.

A soldier from Roland is the first American to die at the hands of ISIS militants during a raid Thursday to rescue hostages held by the group.

Army Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler, 39, was killed Thursday during a raid to rescue hostages held near the northern Iraqi village of Hawija.

The rescue mission, conducted with the aid of Iraqi peshmerga forces, freed about 70 hostages being held by ISIS. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told the Army Times the mission was launched after information was received that the hostages were facing imminent execution by ISIS.

“It was authorized consistent with our counter-ISIL effort to train, advise and assist Iraqi forces,” he said, using another acronym for the terrorist group.

Wheeler was born in Roland, but he graduated from Muldrow High School in 1994.

He joined the Army in 1995 and after basic training was assigned to the First Battalion's 24th Infantry Regiment in Fort Lewis, Wash.

Wheeler served seven years as an infantryman, rifle team leader and squad leader among other assignments during his combat deployments. Wheeler was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg in North Carolina where he became an Army Ranger.

Wheeler later joined the elite Delta Force commando unit.

Muldrow High School English teacher April Isa graduated from the same school with Wheeler. She remembers Wheeler having slightly longer blond hair than most of the boys in their class of about 75 students. He was friendly and outgoing, she said.

“I haven't seen him since we were in school, but he was just a very nice kid who could also joke around some and could be pretty funny,” she said.

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Moore, praised Wheeler's commitment to his country.

“There is no greater sacrifice than risking one's life in combat to further the cause of freedom, and Master Sgt. Wheeler paid the ultimate price to free those held captive by an evil enemy,” Cole said in a statement. “For that, we owe him an eternal debt of gratitude.”
