It looks like a difficult frontal shot to begin with. Why not wait till it turned?

This is what happens when you don't check your zero since last year- my buddy missed in zero wind by a wide margin!!! Hmmm, so he also hadn't practiced in a year?

Sounds like poor preparation on more than one level.

Anybody who has shot long range has done this......
Getting them to admit it is the struggle.

Getting them to admit it is the struggle. Missed, yes. Showed up on an LR hunt with out checking zero in the last year and only 5 rounds? Never.

Funny how little any of that schit really matters now.... I couldn't disagree any more strongly. Based on what has been posted, it is highly relevant. David

How can you even reason taking a shot like this if it's been a year since zero was checked?? Long shots are only successful if you know your DOPE and have shot at that distance. A swag won't get even get you close.

I have no 1st or 2nd hand experience w/ scope/mounts so I can't comment there. Assuming scope / mounts are rock solid, I'll further give the shooter the benefit of the doubt and assume he did in fact practice with another rifle (maybe even a nearly identical set-up in a different chambering). In this case, it seems the pursuit of "the ultimate in long range" cost the shooter his bear.
Sounds like he's not a handloader and chose a bullet/chambering combination that required handloading. Had he chosen some factory ammunition (even with comparably substandard ballistics) and practiced a little he would probably have his bear. For that matter, had he chosen a mundane factory chambering (like a 270win and 150 Partitions) and practiced he would probably have his bear.
The pursuit of "the ultimate" is something that I think we're all guilty of from time to time. Its human nature to tinker and look for an edge. I appreciate Dennis posting.
