Sharps....made the West safe for Winchester!! They were certainly influential but still not in the hands of a fraction of the people that had Winchesters... Truth be told, the models 1859 and 1863 along with the Slant Breech, were probably more influential overall, than the 1874. Just like the '66 was probably more important than the '73 when you think about events that occurred before 1883. Lots of people cite 1886 and Geronimo's surrender as the close of the Frontier. A lot happened before 1900 but 1883 was really the end of the wild west. I'm guessing that the Remington Rolling Block and "surplus" trapdoor Springfields did their share to tame the West, too. Not to mention surplus Spencers and others that most folk either don't know about, or forgot about them. Winchesters, Burgess, Marlins, probably weren't as common as the old movies portrayed them to be. John Wayne made Civil War movies with his '92 Winchester, but obviously, that was nonsense. I'd think that a lot of the folks who went West still used muzzle-loaders they took home from Gettysburg or Shiloh.

A lot happened before 1900 but 1883 was really the end of the wild west. That is not quite true. Tom Horn was hanged in 1903. Electricity and telephones had been invented well before the turn of the century allowing many frontier towns modern conveniences that still weren't universally available in many homes in America into the 1940's. Certainly single shots of all makes were used and relied on for all sorts of uses from hunting to protection. As much as you may like the Sharps and single shot rifles, repeating firearms ruled the day. With magazines holding many rounds, the repeater, regardless of the maker was still the overwhelming weapon of choice on the frontier and well into the 20th century...

With magazines holding many rounds, the repeater, regardless of the maker was still the overwhelming weapon of choice on the frontier and well into the 20th century... I was basically agreeing with you on the Winchester vs. Sharps issue. I was just saying that those Sharps which are not generally as sought-after today, were probably more influential on what I'd term the "old west". On the issue of years, it's still my opinion that the old west was pretty much over after 1882. Certainly some old west events occurred afterwards, especially up to about 1887. Much of the interesting stuff was over by 1883 though. It is telling and IMO my theme supported by Horn. He was using an 1894 in 30-30 and a Savage "belly gun" for much of his work during that time period. As far as being "won", the west was pretty much won before the 1873 even became popular. If you're right about repeaters-and I'm not saying either way, my agreement was more that the 1874 Sharps didn't "make the west safe for Winchesters"-then the west was won by the '66 and the Spencer than it was by the '73.

Not really. They're a decent coyote gun even though a 257 ROY is better. Shrap will be okay as long as he doesn't try to shoot a deer with it.

wtf Shrappy 250 yd scope on a 500 yd rifle ? you getting old or something? MM Everyone knows you don't need any more than a straight 4X for shots up to 600 yards. This is a classic rifle, trying to help it stay that way. Thanks to Whitebird for the older purple Leupold 2-7 scope...

Shrap Have its twin coming in soon. Have its little brother in 243 and have not had time to sight it in. Sure hope both shoots like yours. After reading the thread on guns at high school graduation time, got to thinking about those Model 70 pre 64 featherweights. Danged thread got in my pocket. GW

That is what made me want it. People that don't like 270's usually like 260's and 7mm-08 posing as something new that the 270 has been doing better for 90 years...

Hell I thought pEdaddler might have bestowed you with one of his lowly safe queens. You know, just to try to bring you around a little bit.

The recipe is quite simple. bigwhoop posts a sightless model 70 Featherweight for sale on the classifieds; Next, post "I'll take it" before someone else takes it. Tell Whitebird what you've done, then wait for a scope to show up, put the package together and take it to the range... Good to see you are using JB's recommendation of four shot groups.
Conduct is the best proof of character.

Paddler is like a leprechaun, showing up after the absence of 7 years, then spreading his charms, or so he thought. It is hard not to be impressed with his experience and equipment. I hope he takes me hunting some day...

If he does, take this rifle. It's plenty accurate for grouse.
