Has anyone ever taken a 50 BMG to africa on safari ? This cartridge has more power than just about any other that can be carried by one person. It should be ideal for buffalo, elephant and hippo. A local gunstore has a bullpup model that could be fired off hand.

It would not surprise me if some countries prohibitted the 50 BMG round. I know it makes little sense, but I can imagine people being concerned about the "machine gun" round being freely imported into the country.

I would think that one would need two gun bearers to carry and handle the weight of that gun. I don't think it would be very practical on a Buff hunt..............................Those gun bearers would have to be track stars to keep up with the animals in the bush, of course you could sit back a top a hill 1000 yards back and smack a buff when he wasn't expecting anything.

Actually, it has been used extensively in Africa. LAR Grizzly Arms made a promotional video for their "BIG BORE" .50 BMG. The video shows them taking everything from Jackals to Cape Buffalo with it in Africa. They shoot stuff out to 800 yards with the hand held model. They have a fancy tripod that they carry around to mount it on. They also hunt EVERYTHING in NA with it, including moose and Grizz. I have tried to get my hands on another one of thier videos, because it is FANTASTIC footage and some serious good shooting. They nail a jackal at 635 yards on the first shot. VERY impressive to say the least. The problem with the round is, the lack of expanding bullets. Everything they used were match bullets, but went clear through everything with about a .60 caliber hole, which is more than adequate. Only a couple of the kills were real impressive. Most were like shooting them with a full metal jacket, but still VERY effective. It was the best hunting video I have ever seen. Flinch

...i should think a .500 jeffery, .500ne, .505 gibbs, .577ne, .600ne, or.700ne would be more practical, appropriate and perhaps effective in the event of a charge.
